Where do I even begin?

I believe piano is fun to learn, especially when you can find songs you enjoy. Here you will find a wide variety of music, from finger exercises to custom written sea shanties. Here's a step by step guide on how to best improve your piano skills from the very start.

Get Started

Step 1 — First 2 Weeks: Finding Your First Notes

  • Learn posture, finger numbers, and find Middle C.

  • Practice the five-finger pattern (C–G).

  • Start simple right-hand tunes.

Use your Preliminary Music here; I've designed it specially for very simple right-hand melodies. This gives you quick wins and confidence in reading notes in real time.

Goal: Play one melody with your right hand smoothly, even if very short.

Step 2 — Weeks 3–6: Building Confidence in the Right Hand

  • Keep practicing five-finger positions. Reading the notes without watching your hand is the challenge here.

  • Add in easy right-hand songs that are a little longer and introduce rhythm variety.

This is where your Beginner Music shines — right-hand songs and simple left-hand introductions that are easy to follow.

Goal: Play a full piece with the right hand and understand how reading notes work in the bass clef, keeping a steady beat.

Step 3 — Weeks 7–12: Hands Together for the First Time

  • Start combining both hands in short phrases. Take time to practice the co-ordination in sections as some sections won't be easily sight-read!

  • Focus on playing slowly, keeping rhythm steady (don’t worry about speed yet).

  • Practice switching between melody in the right hand and simple chords/notes in the left.

My Novice Music is built to keep you on your toes, without creating too many complications. Music in this section is designed to introduce playing both hands together in an approachable way.

Goal: Perform one short piece hands together start-to-finish, without hesitations.
